You would be hard pressed to find a more welcoming first hole in golf than the one that greets you here. The fairway is wide, wider, widest. Of course, you still have to hit it, but it’s there, just waiting for you. Years ago I played a course that had a first hole with a slight dog leg right that climbed to an elevated green sitting atop a rise that dove to the right like a black diamond ski run. There were large majestic maples on the left of the green waiting to stand in front of any errant shot hit to that side. Anything less than a triple bogy was a relief—not the best way to start your walk.
On Beaver Island an opening par is not out of the question, simply avoid the four bunkers guarding the corners of the largest green on the course, and your confidence will rise to the day waiting to unfold before you.
